Sweet Stuff

Description

You would be remiss in leaving Zurich without picking up some goodies from Confiserie Sprüngli (distinct from Lindt & Sprüngli which most North Americans are very familiar with by now). It was established in 1836. In 1957, their trademark macaron called a "Luxembourgerli" because it was developed by one of Sprüngli's confectioners from Luxembourg became an instant bestseller and popular gift when visiting family and friends. When I was living in Switzerland and more often when I was living in Zurich I would always make my way to the second floor of Sprüngli's flagship shop off of Paradeplatz and would order my favourite — a bircher muesli (mit Schlagrahm natürlich) and a cup of coffee. It was a ritual. Old world charm that is impossible to replicate, as hard as some try. Pictured here is their shop at the main train station in Zurich.
